HBCD (Flame Retardant) Alternatives (US)

The US Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA) today released a draft report on alternatives to the flame retardant chemical, hexabromocyclododecane (HBCD).

HBCD has persistent, bioaccumulative and toxic characteristics, and is most commonly used as a flame retardant in expanded polystyrene foam (EPS) and extruded polystyrene foam (XPS) manufacture. EPS and XPS are used as rigid foam insulation in the building and construction industry.

This post will be updated when the final report is issued.
